Churches present some unique security challenges.

Your building needs to remain welcoming and accessible while also protecting members, staff, children, volunteers and visitors.

When evaluating security for the coming year, consider areas such as:

• Building entrances and exits
• Children's ministry areas
• Offices and administrative areas
• Parking lots and exterior spaces
• After-hours building access
• Camera coverage and potential blind spots
• Intrusion detection and monitoring

Modern video surveillance can also offer capabilities beyond simply recording footage. AI-powered video solutions can help organizations identify meaningful activity and make large amounts of video easier to manage.

Rather than asking, "Do we need more cameras?", start with "What areas or situations do we need better visibility into?"

That helps technology serve an actual security need instead of simply adding more equipment.

2. Access Control & Visitor Management

Churches often have many different people who need building access at different times—staff members, ministry leaders, volunteers, cleaning crews, contractors and others.

If your church still relies heavily on physical keys, it may be worth considering whether access control belongs in your future technology plan.

This is especially important when planning larger facility projects.

Discussing fire alarm requirements early can help prevent life-safety considerations from becoming an unexpected part of the project later.

4. Networking & Wi-Fi

Think about everything inside a modern church that may depend on the network. Staff computers. Phones. Security devices. Streaming equipment. AV technology. Guest Wi-Fi. Children's ministry devices. Administrative systems. The list continues to grow. That means networking infrastructure shouldn't be an afterthought when planning other technology improvements.

Before adding more devices or systems, consider whether your current network has the coverage, reliability and capacity necessary to support them. A technology upgrade can only perform as well as the infrastructure supporting it.

5. Audio & Video Technology

For many churches, AV is one of the most noticeable technology investments. Sound systems, displays, microphones, speakers, streaming equipment and other AV components directly affect worship services, presentations, meetings and events. But that doesn't necessarily mean everything needs to be upgraded together.

Current church AV planning guidance emphasizes that facility layout, existing infrastructure, equipment condition and project scope can significantly affect what an upgrade requires.

Take inventory of what you already have.

What's working well?

What regularly creates problems?

What equipment is approaching replacement?

What would make the biggest difference to your ministry?

Those answers can help determine where AV dollars should go first.

One of the most helpful things a church can do during budget season is separate technology projects into categories:

Needs now. Needs soon. Future improvements.
