Recently, the ACE-HTI sales and installation teams stepped out of the office and into one of our new-construction projects for hands-on pre-wire training. While some of our technicians worked through the home's pre-wire, other members of our team were able to see the process firsthand, ask questions and better understand the planning that takes place before the drywall ever goes up.

For our team, it was an opportunity to learn from one another.

For homeowners, it's a great reminder that some of the most important technology decisions in a new home happen long before move-in day.

What Is a Home Pre-Wire?

Pre-wiring is the process of installing low-voltage wiring throughout a home during construction, while the walls and ceilings are still open.

Depending on the homeowner's plans, that can include wiring for:

• Security systems and sensors
• Surveillance cameras
• Wi-Fi and networking
• TVs and entertainment spaces
• Whole-home audio and speakers
• Smart-home technology
• Future technology and upgrades

Once drywall goes up, most of that wiring disappears from view — but it becomes the infrastructure supporting technology throughout the home.

Why Plan Before the Drywall Goes Up?

There are plenty of technologies that can be added to an existing home. But when you're already building from the ground up, having access to the open framing creates an opportunity that's difficult to recreate later.

Instead of figuring out how to route new wiring through finished walls and ceilings, technicians can plan cable paths and device locations while everything is accessible.

It's also an opportunity to think beyond what you need today.

Maybe you're not ready for outdoor cameras yet. Maybe whole-home audio isn't part of the current budget. Maybe you don't know exactly how you'll use a particular room.

Planning for those possibilities during construction can make future additions and upgrades much easier.

Good Pre-Wiring Starts With Good Planning

Pre-wiring isn't simply about running as much cable as possible. Where will TVs be located? Where will reliable Wi-Fi coverage matter most? Which entrances should be protected? Where could cameras provide useful coverage? Are there rooms where speakers might eventually be wanted? Where should equipment be centrally located?

Those conversations help determine what should happen behind the walls before those walls are closed. And that's part of why getting our sales and installation teams together in the field is valuable.

Our sales team spends time talking with customers about what they want their homes to do. Our technicians are the ones who turn those plans into working systems. Giving both sides an opportunity to walk through the process together helps strengthen the connection between the initial conversation and the final installation.

Training Beyond the Classroom

At ACE-HTI, training doesn't always happen around a conference table.

Getting into an active new-construction project allows our team to see real-world conditions, talk through installation decisions and learn directly from the technicians doing the work. It's one more way we continue building knowledge across our team — from the first conversation with a customer to installation, service and support.

Because when the walls are still open, there's a lot more to see than lumber and wire.
